Powder Coating vs. Paint for Iron Railings and Gates

Updated October 20, 2026

The finish is what stands between steel and rust. In Riverside, where summers are long, hot and bright and Santa Ana winds blow grit around, the finish choice makes a big difference to how long a railing or gate looks good.

How they work

  • Powder coating is a dry powder applied electrostatically to cleaned steel and baked in an oven, forming a hard, even shell. It’s done in a shop, so the railing or gate goes to the coater before installation.
  • Paint is applied by brush or spray, in the shop or on site, usually over a primer.

Our take for Inland Empire homes

  • Exterior railings and gates: powder coat. The extra upfront cost pays off in years of less maintenance.
  • Interior stair railings: either works. Powder coat gives the most even finish, and paint is fine indoors.
  • Repairs to existing iron: often painted on site after rust removal and priming, unless the piece can be removed for coating.

Preparation matters as much as the coating. Rust and mill scale need to come off before any finish goes on. Ask your fabricator how they prep steel before coating.

Common questions

Can powder-coated railings be touched up?

Small chips can be touched up with matching paint. The touch-up won't be as tough as the original powder coat, so seal chips quickly to keep moisture off bare steel.

Can an existing railing be powder coated?

Yes, if it can be removed and taken to a coating shop. The railing is stripped or blasted, cleaned, coated and reinstalled.
